The aim of this lecture will be to describe how the use of electrophysiological recording techniques have contributed to our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the profound effects of opioid drugs on the central nervous system. While reflecting on what to include I was struck by how, in some areas, we are still seeking to answer the same fundamental questions that were being posed in the 1970s when I began my scientific career. Of course nowadays we have much more detailed information, crystal structures even, and use more sophisticated tools but the same questions still remain to be answered.
